The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled about 10 million pounds of beef and poultry made by BrucePac in Oklahoma on October 9, 2024.
The recall includes almost 10 million pounds of food that may be contaminated with Listeria, a harmful bacteria that can make people very sick.
The Reason behind the recall
Listeria bacteria was found during routine testing of BrucePac’s chicken products, leading to a recall. Further tests confirmed the presence of the bacteria, prompting recalls of beef and poultry products. Public health could be at risk, even though no illnesses have been reported.
Products Affected
The bad meat and chicken were made between June 19, 2024, and October 8, 2024. They were sent out all over the country, mostly to stores, restaurants & businesses.
Customers and companies are encouraged to look for products with the establishment numbers “51205” or “P-51205” within or under the USDA mark of inspection, even though the whole list of products has not yet been made public. The complete list of impacted items and their labels will be added to the company’s website soon.
Listeria’s Health Risk
Listeriosis is a potentially fatal condition caused by a dangerous bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. Possible symptoms include fever, muscle pains, nausea, and diarrhea.
Severe consequences are more likely to occur in vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems.
Listeriosis can cause hospitalization or even death in severe instances. Seek medical care right away if you fear you’ve taken contaminated items and start experiencing symptoms.
