In the United States, sandwiches are one of the most popular comfort foods. Sandwich chains all over the country have cult followings for their food, whether it’s a rich, meaty sub or a veggie-packed treat. Jersey Mike’s is no different. Gourmet cooks and regular people alike love Jersey Mike’s because of its newly sliced, made-to-order subs.
What is it about Jersey Mike’s that people love so much? So I could answer that question, I tried their five most famous meals to see which one really stood out.
A person who works at the chain says that Turkey and Provolone, Club Sub, Club Supreme, Original Italian, and Mike’s Famous Philly are the candidates. Besides the Mike’s Famous Philly, all of them are cold subs with cold cuts and onions, lettuce, tomato, red wine vinegar, olive oil, oregano, and salt. This is how Mike’s does it.
In order of how good they are, here is a full list of Jersey Mike’s’ five most famous subs, from least impressive to finest.
Top Jersey Mike’s Subs
5. Turkey and provolone: A Dull Classic
Nutrition Facts (Per Regular Sub)
- 770 calories
- 41.05 grams of fat, of which 9.99 grams are saturated.
- 1,872.97 mg of sodium
- 57.66 grams of carbs, with 4.3 grams of fiber and 6.37 grams of sugar.
- 43.62 g of protein
The Turkey and Provolone burger at Jersey Mike’s is one of the more classic items on the menu. As a child, this was my favorite sandwich, so I went in with high hopes. I really wanted to save this sub, but my nostalgia wasn’t enough.
How They Look
The sandwich didn’t look very good. It was a dull mix of white turkey, bread, and cheese; it didn’t have much color or life to it. There was slime on the turkey and cheese, which made the sandwich look sad and unattractive.
The Taste: This sub tasted just as dull as it looked. The turkey wasn’t very tasty, the provolone wasn’t really visible, and there was so much bread that it felt more like a crust than a sandwich.
It was clear that this sub didn’t live up to expectations because the shredded lettuce, which is usually an easy addition, was the best part of the whole thing. It wasn’t worth the $11.24 price tag.
4. Too Much of a Good Thing at Club Supreme
Nutrition Facts (Per Regular Sub)
- About 1,140 calories
- 76.08 grams of fat (16.4 grams of saturated fat)
- 1,977.51 mg of sodium
- 58.41 grams of carbs, with 4.3 grams of fiber and 6.83 grams of sugar.
- 57.20 g of protein
You would expect a fancy burger from Jersey Mike’s if it had a name like “Club Supreme.” But maybe it’s too fancy. This sub has a huge amount of stuff in it: roast beef, turkey, Swiss cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, and mayo.
How They Look
Most of the time, roast beef isn’t the most visually appealing meat. In this case, the dark strips of cold meat didn’t help. But the contrast between the roast beef, turkey, and fresh vegetables looked a little better than the contrast between the turkey and provolone. The sandwich looked intimidating because it was so big and full of toppings.
How It Tastes
The sandwich looked scary, but it tasted better than I thought it would. With its rich, smooth taste, the Club Supreme really stood out thanks to the mayo and bacon.
But the roast beef was disappointingly mild and didn’t add much taste. The bread was soft and fluffy, but it seemed too big for the foods. The $12.09 burger wasn’t terrible, but it didn’t go together as well as some of the other options.
3. Mike’s Famous Philly: A Surprising Finalist
Nutrition Facts (Per Regular Sub)
- 700 calories
- 30.5 g of fat, of which 13.86 g are saturated.
- 1,957.68 mg of sodium
- 62.23 grams of carbs, with 2.86 grams of fiber and 7.94 grams of sugar.
- 44.50 g of protein
I haven’t always liked cheesesteaks, but Mike’s Famous Philly, Jersey was a nice treat. What Mike does with the traditional Philly sandwich. This burger changed my mind. It had thinly sliced meat, grilled onions, peppers, and American cheese.
How They Look
At first glance, this meal didn’t look like it would be very good. It looked like there was too much cheese and not enough steak because it was hidden under the bread. It scared me that it wouldn’t deliver.
How It Tastes
But after just one bite, I changed my mind. The sandwich was full of flavor, and the peppers and onions that had been sautéed added a slight sweetness that went well with the steak.
It was rich and tasty because the American cheese melted into the meat. Aside from that, I didn’t like that the sandwich was cold when I took it out of the package, which made it less appealing. But at $11.60, this was a pleasant treat and a good contender for this spot.
2. The club sub is a classic cold cut
Nutrition Facts (Per Regular Sub)
- About 1,110 calories
- 77.33 grams of fat (16.93 grams of saturated fat)
- 2,468.47 mg of sodium
- 59.53 grams of carbs, with 4.3 grams of fiber and 8.21 grams of sugar.
- 47.86 g of protein
The Club Sub looked like any other simple cold-cut sandwich at first glance. It sounded like the others because it had turkey, ham, cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, and mayo on it. But for some reason, all of the flavors worked so well together that it was shocking.
How They Look
This meal didn’t look very different from the others. It looked almost the same as the Turkey and Provolone, but the ham gave it a splash of color that it needed. This sub also seemed to have a much better mix of bread to filling.
The Taste: The Club Sub was surprisingly tasty. The ham added a salty and savory taste that went well with the turkey and cheese.
The smoky bacon gave it a nice crunch, and the mayo wasn’t too strong like it was in the Club Supreme. It was all the right size, and the vegetables gave it just the right crunch and freshness. If you like cold cuts, this $12.09 burger is a good choice.
1. The original Italian: a huge, spicy beast
Nutrition Facts (Per Regular Sub)
- Some 910 calories
- 54.18 grams of fat (15.02 grams of saturated fat)
- 2,467.79 mg of sodium
- 62.29 grams of carbs, with 4.38 grams of fiber and 10.35 grams of sugar.
- 45.04 g of protein
The Original Italian was the clear winner in this taste test. This sub is a meat lover’s dream because it has cheese, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, and pepperoni on it. With a lot of different smoked meats on it, it’s a bold and tasty sandwich that stands out.
How They Look
This dish looks beautiful. The fresh vegetables add a splash of color, and the cured meats spill out of the bread. This burger looks as good as it tastes. The bread didn’t feel too heavy on top of the fillings like the others did; it was the right mix.
The Taste: This sandwich tastes like a bunch of different things all at once. The pepperoni is the star of the show; it adds a hot kick that goes well with the vinegary salad dressing and fresh vegetables.
Because there are so many kinds of cured foods, each bite has a different taste. The bread is strong enough to keep everything together without being too much. The Original Italian, which costs $12.09, is by far the best sandwich I’ve ever had.
Final Thoughts:
Jersey Mike’s has a good selection of burgers, but The Original Italian stands out as the best. Jersey Mike’s knows how to make a great sub. The Mike’s Famous Philly is a surprise hit, and the Club Sub is the perfect cold cut.
Some sandwiches, like the Turkey and Provolone, weren’t quite what I was hoping for, but the really great ones more than made up for it. Jersey Mike’s has something for everyone, whether you like sausages that are hot or a cheesesteak that makes you feel good.
